Good Friday: The Love That Did Not Look Away

Good Friday is one of those days that asks us to slow down and sit with something uncomfortable. We live in a world that moves fast, that prefers highlights over hard moments, that would rather skip to Sunday. But the church has always insisted that we stop here (at the cross) and stay long enough to let it mean something.

What happened on Good Friday was not a tragedy that God allowed. It was a love that God initiated. Jesus was not a victim of circumstances spiraling out of control. He was the Son of God, walking deliberately toward the cross, eyes open, fully aware of what it would cost. He could have called it off at any moment. He didn't. Not because He had to, but because He chose to.

And here is what makes that staggering: He did it for us while we were still sinners. Not after we had cleaned ourselves up. Not after we had proven our worth or demonstrated our loyalty. Romans 5:8 is careful about the timing, while we were still sinners. The love came first. The cross came before our repentance. That is not the way love usually works in this world. We expect love to be earned or at least reciprocated. But this love moved toward us when we were at our worst, and it did not look away.

For many of us, the weight of our own failures can make it hard to believe we are truly forgiven. We replay our mistakes and wonder if grace really extends that far. Good Friday answers that question. The cross is the measure of how far God was willing to go. It is not a small gesture. It is everything. And it was done with full knowledge of who you are and what you have done.

Today is not a day for answers. It is a day for sitting at the foot of the cross and letting the weight of that love settle over you.
