Worth More Than Your Output
Scripture
“Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
Luke 10:20, ESVReflection
Today is Labor Day, a holiday built around work. It is a good thing to honor the people who keep the world running. But it is also a good day to ask a quieter question: if you could not produce anything this week, no grades, no shifts, no posts, no progress, would you still feel like you matter?
Jesus once sent out seventy-two of His followers on a mission, and they came back thrilled. It worked. People were healed. Even demons obeyed them. If anyone had a reason to define themselves by results, it was this group. And Jesus did not dismiss what they had done. But He redirected their joy. Don't build your happiness on what you accomplished, He said. Build it on this: your names are written in heaven.
That is a striking thing to say to people at the height of their success. Jesus knew that a joy rooted in performance is fragile. The same results that lift you up today can disappear tomorrow, and if your sense of worth goes with them, you are always one bad week away from falling apart. A name written in heaven is different. It was not earned by your output, so it cannot be erased by your failures.
Many of us carry a quiet scoreboard in our heads. We feel valuable on productive days and worthless on slow ones. Today, on a day off, try setting that scoreboard down. Rest without guilt. Enjoy a meal without checking your phone for progress. Your name is known by God, not because of what you produce, but because He chose to write it there. That is something worth celebrating.
Prayer
“Father, thank You that my name is written in heaven, not because of what I achieve, but because of Your grace. Free me from measuring my worth by my productivity. Teach me to rest, to enjoy, and to find my joy in belonging to You. Amen.”
