The God Who Sings Over You
Scripture
“The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”
Zephaniah 3:17, ESVReflection
Think about the voices that play in your head on a typical Monday morning. The professor who seemed unimpressed with your last paper. The group chat that went quiet after you sent a message. The parent who loves you but always seems to ask about the next achievement. Most of us walk around with a soundtrack of other people's opinions running underneath everything we do.
Zephaniah is a small, often overlooked book near the end of the Old Testament, and most of it is pretty heavy. It is full of warnings and judgment. But near the very end, the tone changes completely. The prophet describes God not as a distant judge but as someone who is in your midst, who rejoices over you with gladness, and who sings over you loudly. Not reluctantly. Not with a sigh. With joy.
That image is worth sitting with. When was the last time you imagined God being glad about you? Not tolerating you, not waiting for you to improve, but delighting in you the way a parent hums over a sleeping child. The verse also says He will quiet you by His love. Some translations put it this way: He will no longer rebuke you. His love is meant to calm the noise, not add to it.
This week, when the other voices get loud, try to tune into this one. You are not a project God is grudgingly working on. You are someone He sings over. That does not change what is on your schedule today, but it can change who you are when you walk into it.
Prayer
“Father, there are so many voices telling me who I am and what I'm worth. Quiet them with Your love. Help me believe that You are glad about me, that You rejoice over me, and that Your song is louder than every criticism. Let me walk into this week as someone You delight in. Amen.”
