Called Before You Feel Ready
Scripture
“And the LORD turned to him and said, 'Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?'”
Judges 6:14, ESVReflection
Gideon is not where you would expect to find a hero. When the story begins, he is hiding in a winepress, threshing wheat in secret so the Midianites will not steal it. A winepress is a low, cramped place, built for crushing grapes, not for threshing grain. He is tucked away out of sight, doing his work quietly and hoping nobody notices him. And that is exactly where an angel finds him and says, "The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor." Gideon must have looked around to see who else was standing there.
Maybe you know that feeling. Halfway through the week, with assignments stacking up, it is easy to feel like you are just surviving in a corner somewhere while everyone else is out living their purpose. Gideon answers the way many of us would. My clan is the weakest. I am the least in my family. Why me? He is not being humble so much as honest about how he feels. And notice that God does not argue with the résumé. He does not say, "You are better than you think." He simply says, "Do not I send you?" The calling does not rest on Gideon's strength. It rests on the one doing the sending.
Look at the phrase "this might of yours." God does not wait for Gideon to become someone else first. He points to what is already there, however small it feels, and says, go in that. Calling often works this way. It rarely arrives after we have finally become confident or qualified. It usually arrives in the middle of ordinary work, in a place we think no one is watching, and asks for a first step before we have a full plan.
So today, try asking a quieter question than "What is my life purpose?" Ask, "Where might God be sending me this week?" It could be a lonely classmate you have been meaning to text, a group project where someone needs to take responsibility, a ministry team that needs one more hand, or a hard conversation you have been avoiding. You do not have to feel like a mighty warrior. You only have to trust that the one who sends you goes with you. Gideon's story is a reminder that God is comfortable calling people out of winepresses.
Prayer
“Lord, sometimes I feel small and hidden, and I wonder whether you could really use someone like me. Thank you that you see me where I am and that your calling does not depend on my confidence. Show me where you are sending me this week, even if it is just one person or one small step. Give me courage to go in the strength I have, trusting that you go with me. Take away my excuses, and make me faithful in the ordinary places. In Jesus' name, amen.”
