Rest Is Not Earned, It Is Given
Scripture
“Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the LORD loves rests between his shoulders.”
Deuteronomy 33:12Reflection
It is the middle of October, and for a lot of us that means midterms, deadlines, and the quiet pressure of wondering whether we are keeping up. Somewhere around this point in the semester, many students start to feel like their worth is a number on a screen: a grade, a follow count, a performance review, a number of people who texted back. If you are tired right now, this verse is for you.
Moses speaks these words over the tribe of Benjamin just before he dies. Think about that for a moment. This is a blessing given at the end of a long, hard journey through the wilderness, and the first word God gives Benjamin is not "work" or "prove yourself." It is "beloved." Before Benjamin does anything, he is named as someone the LORD loves. And the rest of the sentence flows from that name: because you are beloved, you can rest secure. Rest is not the reward for finishing everything. Rest is the natural posture of someone who knows whose they are.
I love the picture at the end, "rests between his shoulders." It is the image of a child carried on a father's shoulders, or a lamb carried by a shepherd. A child on a parent's shoulders is not tense about the route. She does not check the map or worry about the pace. She simply goes where she is carried, and she can see farther than she ever could on her own two feet. Many of us are trying to walk the whole road under our own power, exhausted, when God has been offering us a ride the entire time.
So this week, try something small. Before you open your laptop or your notes, pause for one minute and say out loud, "I am beloved of the LORD." Not "I am smart," or "I am doing well," or "I am behind." Just that. Let that be the ground you stand on before the work begins. You may still have a hard week of studying, but you can do it from rest rather than for rest. You are held, all day long.
Prayer
“Father, I confess that I often try to earn what You have already given. I carry my grades, my reputation, and my fears as if everything depends on me. Today, remind me that I am Your beloved. Let me rest secure in You, shielded and carried, even in the middle of a busy week. Teach me to work from Your love and not for it. In Jesus' name, amen.”
