Not My People, Now My People
Scripture
“And I will have mercy on No Mercy, and I will say to Not My People, 'You are my people'; and he shall say, 'You are my God.'”
Hosea 2:23, ESVReflection
By the middle of October, most of us have been handed a few labels. A midterm grade. A comment from a professor. A group chat you were left out of, or a friend group that quietly rearranged itself without you. Labels have a way of sticking. Before long you stop saying "I did poorly on that exam" and start saying "I am the kind of person who always falls behind." One is an event. The other is an identity, and it is a heavy thing to carry around.
Hosea's story is about labels. God told the prophet to name his children with names that sounded like verdicts: No Mercy, and Not My People. Imagine being a child called Not My People. Imagine hearing it every time someone called you to dinner. Those names were meant to describe a nation that had wandered far from God, and they sounded final. But then, in the middle of the book, the same God turns the names inside out. No Mercy receives mercy. Not My People hears, "You are my people." The label did not get the last word. God did.
Notice what makes the difference. The people did not earn a new name by cleaning themselves up first. They did not submit a better resume. God simply spoke, and what He spoke became true. That is good news for anyone who has ever felt like the outsider, the one who does not quite belong in the dorm, the church, the family, or the friend group. Your belonging does not depend on how well you perform this week. It depends on what God has said over you, and He has said it with a voice that does not take back its words.
So this Monday, try something small. Write down the label that has been loudest in your head lately, the one that says you are behind, too much, not enough, or on the outside. Then hold it up next to this verse and let God say the other sentence over it. You are my people. You are not what the last grade, the last argument, or the last lonely night said about you. You belong to Him, and you are allowed to start the week from there.
Prayer
“Father, thank You that You are the God who renames. You know the labels I have been carrying, the ones other people gave me and the ones I gave myself. Today I place them in Your hands. Speak over me the words You have already spoken: that I am Yours, that I belong, that I am loved with mercy that does not run out. Help me walk into this week not as someone trying to earn a place, but as someone who has already been given one. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
