Scripture

“He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.”

Deuteronomy 32:10

Reflection

By late October, the newness of the semester is gone. The syllabus has turned into actual deadlines, midterms are stacked on top of each other, and the group chat that felt so lively in August has gotten quiet. If you are honest, there may be mornings when you feel like you are just getting through, and that nobody would notice if you were not. This verse was written for that kind of season.

Moses is recalling how God first found Israel. Notice where. Not in a palace, not at the top of a résumé, not after they had proven anything. He found them in a desert land, in the howling waste of the wilderness. The word "found" matters. It suggests God was the one searching, and that He was not embarrassed by the place where He located them. Your identity did not begin when you got the grade, the internship, or the friend group. It began with a God who came looking for you in the empty places, and who stayed.

Then look at the three things He does next. He encircled them, which is protection, a ring of presence around people who were exposed. He cared for them, which is attention to the small, daily needs of a wandering people. And He kept them as the apple of His eye, which is the pupil of the eye, the most guarded and tender part of a person. You protect it by instinct. You flinch before you even think. That is how quickly God moves toward you when you are hurting or afraid.

So today, when the voice in your head says you are only as valuable as your output, answer it with this verse. You were found before you were productive. You are encircled even when you cannot feel it. And you are guarded like the pupil of an eye, not because you have it together, but because you are His. Walk into your classes, your shift, your hard conversations today as someone who has already been found.

Prayer

“Father, thank You for finding me when I did not even know I was lost. On the days I feel unseen, remind me that I am the apple of Your eye. Quiet the voices that measure my worth by what I produce, and let me rest in Your care today. Help me to treat the people around me, especially the lonely ones, as people You have also gone looking for. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
