When You Run Out of Words

Oct 29, 2026 · Thursday

Scripture

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”

Romans 8:26

Reflection

There is a particular kind of tired that shows up late in the fall semester. The excitement of the first weeks is gone, midterms have come and gone or are still hanging over you, and the holidays feel close but not close enough. In that kind of tired, many of us sit down to pray and find that nothing comes. We open our mouths and the words that used to flow feel flat, or they simply do not arrive. If that has been you lately, I want to say something gently: you have not failed at prayer.

Paul writes this sentence to people who were living under real pressure, and he does not pretend that prayer is always eloquent. He says plainly that we do not know what to pray for as we ought. Notice how honest that is. The apostle who planted churches and wrote half the New Testament includes himself in that "we." Not knowing what to say is not a sign of weak faith. It is simply part of being human in front of a God who is far bigger than our vocabulary.

And then comes the part I keep returning to. The Spirit himself intercedes for us. Think about a friend who sits beside you in the hospital waiting room, or in your dorm room after a terrible phone call from home. Often they say nothing. They just stay, and somehow their presence says what words could not. That is a small picture of what Paul describes. When you cannot form a sentence, the Spirit is already speaking on your behalf, with groanings too deep for words. Your sighs, your blank stares at the ceiling, the heaviness you cannot name, all of it is being carried into the Father's presence by Someone who understands it perfectly.

So today, maybe lower the bar. You do not need a polished prayer. Sit for two minutes and say, "Lord, I do not know what to say. Here I am." Let that be enough. Name one thing that is weighing on you, even if it comes out messy. Then rest in the truth that you are not holding up the conversation alone. God is not waiting for your best words. He is listening to your honest heart, and the Spirit is filling in every gap.

Prayer

“Father, I am tired and my words feel small today. I do not know how to pray about everything I am carrying, so I simply bring it all to you as it is. Thank you that your Spirit speaks for me when I cannot speak for myself. Teach me to rest in your presence without pressure to perform. Hold the things I cannot explain, and give me a quiet confidence that you hear me. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
