Your Times Are in His Hands

Scripture

“But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, 'You are my God.' My times are in your hand.”

Psalm 31:14-15a

Reflection

There is a particular kind of tired that shows up in early November. The excitement of a new semester has worn off, midterms have come and gone, finals are visible on the horizon, and the year-end decisions are starting to press in. Where will I live next year? Will I get into that program? Will this friendship survive the distance? Many of us are carrying questions that have no answer yet, and the waiting itself becomes heavy.

David wrote Psalm 31 from a place like that. He was not on a mountaintop. He mentions being in distress, being whispered about, and feeling forgotten like a broken pot. And yet in the middle of it he does something quietly brave. He says two short sentences: "I trust in you." "You are my God." He does not say that he understands what is happening. He does not say that he feels calm. He simply chooses to say out loud who God is, even while the circumstances say otherwise.

Then comes the line worth underlining: "My times are in your hand." Notice that David does not say my plans or my outcomes. He says my times. The seasons of waiting, the stretches of silence, the months that feel like they are going nowhere, all of it sits in a hand that is not careless. Think about how you hold something fragile that you love. You do not grip it in panic, and you do not drop it. That is the picture. Your unfinished seasons are being held, not ignored.

Faith, then, is not the absence of questions. It is deciding where to put your weight while the questions are still open. This week, try David's two sentences. When the worry starts spinning at night, say it plainly: "I trust in you. You are my God." You may have to say it ten times before it settles in your heart, and that is fine. You are not pretending to be strong. You are leaning on someone who already is.

Prayer

“Lord, you know the questions I am carrying right now, the ones I can say out loud and the ones I cannot. I do not have the answers, and I am tired of acting like I do. Today I choose to say what David said: I trust in you, and you are my God. Hold my times in your hands, the waiting, the decisions, and the seasons I do not understand. Teach me to rest in your care instead of gripping my own plans. Give me peace for this week, and help me take the next small step with you. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
