Scripture
“O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.”
Psalm 5:3Reflection
Think about what you reach for first when you wake up. For most of us it is the phone. Before our feet touch the floor, we have already read a text, scanned a notification, or checked a grade. Someone else's voice, someone else's urgency, has already set the tone for the day. David lived in a world without screens, but he knew this problem. So he built a habit: in the morning, before anything else claims him, he lifts his voice to God.
Notice what he says. He does not say, "In the morning I will get my act together and then pray." He says, "You hear my voice." He starts from the assumption that God is already listening. We often delay prayer because we think we need to be ready for it: calmer, more focused, more spiritual. David simply shows up with whatever voice he has that day, groggy or anxious or distracted, and trusts that it is heard. If you are in the middle of midterms, or dreading the weeks ahead, or carrying a conversation you do not know how to start, that is good news. You do not have to clean up your prayer before you bring it.
Then he adds something easy to miss: "I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch." The word for prepare is the picture of arranging wood on an altar, laying things out in order. Prayer, for David, is not only talking. It is laying the day out before God, piece by piece, and then looking up to see what He does. Many of us pray and then immediately sprint into the day without waiting even a moment. David watches. He expects an answer, a nudge, a door, a peace. As the days grow shorter this time of year and the mornings feel darker, there is something quietly hopeful about a person who keeps watch at dawn.
So try something small this week. Tomorrow morning, before you open any app, say one honest sentence to God. Name one thing you are carrying today and set it down in front of Him. Then pause for ten seconds and just watch. You may not hear anything dramatic. But you will have begun your day by being heard, and that changes how the rest of it sounds.
Prayer
“Lord, You are the first voice I want to hear and the first voice I want to answer. Forgive me for the mornings I give my attention to everything but You. Today I lay out before You my classes, my worries, my relationships, and the things I do not know how to say. Thank You that You are already listening. Teach me to wait and to watch, and help me to notice what You are doing. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
