How We Actually Win

Scripture

“They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.”

Revelation 12:11

Reflection

Revelation 12 describes a war, not the kind fought with weapons and armies, but the deeper spiritual conflict that runs underneath every earthly conflict. And in the middle of that war, there is a verse that tells us exactly how God's people overcome. It is one of the most counter-intuitive statements in all of Scripture.

They won by the blood of the Lamb. Not by superior strategy. Not by gaining more influence or building bigger platforms or getting the right people into positions of power. They overcame because of what Jesus did on the cross, a victory that was already accomplished, that cannot be undone, that does not depend on current political conditions or cultural trends.

They won by the word of their testimony. They kept speaking. They kept living as witnesses to what they had experienced of God, even when that testimony was costly. Their voices mattered, not because they were powerful, but because they were true.

And they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. This is the part that challenges us most. The reason many of us lose ground spiritually is not that we face overwhelming opposition. It is that we love our comfort, our reputation, and our sense of security more than we love faithfulness. We shrink not from death, but from awkwardness, from exclusion, from being misunderstood. And so we go quiet exactly when our voice matters most.

The battle is real. But so is the victory. And the victory does not belong to whoever accumulates the most earthly power. It belongs to those who remain faithful to what is true, who keep speaking, and who refuse to let the fear of loss silence them.

Prayer

“Lord, remind me today that the victory has already been won. I don't need to fight as though the outcome is uncertain. I need to live as someone who knows how the story ends. Where I have shrunk back out of fear or love of comfort, forgive me and restore my courage. Help me to be a faithful witness, in the small moments and the large ones alike.”
