Eyes on Your Own Path
Scripture
“When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, 'Lord, what about this man?' Jesus said to him, 'If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!'”
John 21:21-22, ESVReflection
Peter had just had one of the most tender conversations of his life. On a beach after breakfast, the risen Jesus had restored him three times over, and then told him something sobering about his future: one day he would be led where he did not want to go. Peter took that in, turned around, saw John walking behind them, and asked the most human question imaginable. What about him?
If you have ever scrolled through someone else's internship announcement, engagement photos, or acceptance letter and felt a small knot in your stomach, you understand Peter. Comparison is quiet and fast. One minute you are at peace with your own path, and the next you are measuring it against someone else's and coming up short. Peter was not being cruel. He just wanted to know if his calling was fair.
Jesus answered gently but firmly. What is that to you? You follow me. He did not explain John's future. He did not reassure Peter that everything would even out. He simply brought Peter's eyes back to his own road. Calling is not a competition with a single finish line. God writes a different story for each of His people, and He does not owe us a comparison chart.
Midweek is a good time to check where your eyes are. Are you running your race or watching someone else's? The freedom Jesus offers here is real: you do not have to understand why someone else's path looks easier or more exciting. You only have to take the next step on yours. Follow me is enough of an instruction for today.
Prayer
“Jesus, forgive me for the times I have measured my life against someone else's. Turn my eyes back to You and to the path You have given me. Help me celebrate others without envy and follow You without comparison. Today, let 'You follow me' be enough. Amen.”
