The Prayer That Won't Let Go
Scripture
“Then he said, 'Let me go, for the day has broken.' But Jacob said, 'I will not let you go unless you bless me.'”
Genesis 32:26, ESVReflection
It is one of the strangest scenes in the Bible. Jacob, alone at night by a river, ends up in a wrestling match with a mysterious man who turns out to be God Himself. They struggle until dawn. Jacob's hip is wrenched out of joint, and still he refuses to let go. I will not let you go unless you bless me.
We do not usually think of prayer as wrestling. We picture folded hands, quiet words, maybe a sense of calm. And sometimes prayer is like that. But there are seasons when prayer feels more like Jacob's night: long, tiring, confusing, and painful. You keep showing up with the same request. You are not sure anything is happening. Part of you wants to quit and go to sleep.
What strikes me about Jacob is not his strength. It is his stubbornness in the right direction. He was hurt and exhausted, but he held on to God. And God did not scold him for it. He blessed him and gave him a new name, Israel, which means one who struggles with God. It seems God is not offended by persistent, honest, even desperate prayer. He invites it.
If you are in a season of wrestling, keep holding on. Bring the same request again tonight if you need to. Tell God you are tired of asking and ask anyway. Jacob walked away from that river with a limp, but he also walked away with a blessing and a new identity. Sometimes the struggle itself is where God meets us most deeply.
Prayer
“Lord, I have been bringing this same prayer to You for a long time, and I am tired. But I don't want to let go of You. Meet me in the struggle. Give me the stubborn faith to keep holding on, and let me walk away from this season knowing You more. Amen.”
