The One Who Came Back

Oct 2, 2026 · Friday

Scripture

“Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.”

Luke 17:15-16, ESV

Reflection

Ten men with leprosy stood at a distance and called out to Jesus for mercy. He told them to go show themselves to the priests, and on the way, all ten were healed. Imagine that moment. Skin made new. A future suddenly opened up. A way back to family and community. Nine of them kept walking. One turned around.

It is easy to be hard on the nine. But honestly, they were probably doing exactly what they were told. They were heading to the priests, following instructions, eager to get on with their new lives. They were not ungrateful people exactly. They were just busy receiving the gift and moving on to the next thing. That might be the most common way gratitude gets lost: not through rebellion but through momentum.

The one who came back was a Samaritan, an outsider, the person least expected to show up. He did not just say a polite thank you on the way out. He turned around, praised God loudly, and fell at Jesus' feet. His gratitude made him stop. It interrupted his plans and pulled him back toward the giver.

This first Friday of October, before the weekend sweeps you forward, try turning around. Think back over the last month and name the things God has done for you. A friend who checked in. An exam that went better than expected. Strength you did not have on your own. Then go back to Jesus and say thank you. Gratitude is not just a feeling. Sometimes it is a decision to stop walking and return.

Prayer

“Lord, You have done so much for me that I have rushed past without noticing. Today I want to turn around and thank You. Thank You for the healing, the help, and the quiet gifts of this past month. Make me like the one who came back, not just blessed but grateful. Amen.”
