Written on His Hands

Scripture

“Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.”

Isaiah 49:16, ESV

Reflection

Mondays have a way of making us measure ourselves. The inbox is full, the calendar is packed, and before the day has really started we are already comparing our to-do list with someone else's highlight reel. By the first week of October, a lot of us have been running on that treadmill long enough to wonder quietly whether we are keeping up, and whether anyone would notice if we slipped behind.

The people of Israel were asking a much bigger version of that question. They were exiles, far from home, with Jerusalem in ruins. In the verse just before this one, Zion says, "The Lord has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me." That is a sentence worth sitting with, because many of us have said some version of it, even if only in our heads. Forgotten by friends who got busy. Overlooked in a class of two hundred. Unsure if God is paying attention to someone as ordinary as me.

God answers with a picture instead of an argument. He does not say, "Of course I remember you." He says he has engraved you on the palms of his hands. Think about what that means. You do not engrave something you plan to erase. Engraving is permanent and personal, and it is placed where you cannot avoid seeing it. Every time God reaches out to give, to catch, to hold, or to work, your name is right there in front of him. And Christians have always noticed that the hands of Jesus would later carry real marks of their own, scars that say you were worth the cost.

So here is a small thing to try today. When you catch yourself measuring your worth by a grade, a job title, a follower count, or how many people texted you back, pause and say quietly, "I am written on God's hands." It will not fix your schedule, but it can change who you think you are while you walk through it. You do not have to earn a place that has already been engraved. Start your week from there, and see how much lighter you can carry the rest.

Prayer

“Father, I confess how often I measure myself by what I do and what others think of me. Thank you that you have not forgotten me, and that my name is held in your hands. When I feel overlooked or behind, remind me that I am known and kept. Help me live this week from a settled place, not from the pressure to prove myself. Let me also see the people around me the way you see them, as ones you have written on your hands too. In Jesus' name, amen.”
