The Place You Did Not Choose
Scripture
“But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will have welfare.”
Jeremiah 29:7Reflection
Most of us picture our calling as something far away. A different city, a bigger stage, a future job title that finally makes all this waiting worth it. So we treat the present as a hallway, something to hurry through. But when Jeremiah wrote to the people of Israel, he did not tell them to wait for the door to open. They were stuck in Babylon, a place they never chose, surrounded by strangers and a culture that was not theirs. And God's instruction was surprisingly ordinary: seek the welfare of this city. Pray for it. Build in it.
Maybe you know that feeling right now. It is the middle of October, the novelty of the semester has worn off, and the midterms are piling up. Maybe you are at a school you did not plan on, in a job that feels like a placeholder, or in a friend group that is not quite home. It is tempting to live with one foot out the door, saving your real self for later. Jeremiah's letter says something different. The place you are standing is not a waiting room. It is the assignment.
Notice what God asks of the exiles. He does not ask them to love Babylon's gods or forget who they are. He asks them to care about the people next to them: to pray for the city and to work for its good. Calling is rarely a lightning bolt. More often it looks like being the person who remembers the new student's name, who stays kind during a stressful group project, who prays quietly for the floor, the classroom, or the office where you spend your days. Small faithfulness in a place you did not pick is often the very thing God uses to shape you for whatever comes next.
And look at the last line: "in its welfare you will have welfare." God ties your good to the good of the place He has put you. When you stop treating where you are as temporary and start giving yourself to it, you often find that you begin to flourish too. So today, ask a simple question: who or what in this place has God put in front of me to care for? Start there. That may be your calling for today.
Prayer
“Lord, You know exactly where I am, even when it is not where I thought I would be. Forgive me for living as if this season does not matter. Open my eyes to the people and the needs around me, and give me the courage to care for them. Teach me to pray for this place and to work for its good. I trust that You have sent me here on purpose. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
