Pour It Out, Don't Polish It
Scripture
“Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.”
Psalm 62:8, ESVReflection
It is the middle of October, and for a lot of us that means midterms are either happening or hanging over our heads. The semester has stopped being new. The excitement of the first weeks has worn off, and what is left is the actual work, the actual tiredness, and sometimes the actual questions we did not expect to be asking by now. This is the season when many of us get quiet with God, not because we have nothing to say, but because we are not sure how to say it.
Notice the verb the psalmist chooses: pour out. Not "present" or "compose" or "summarize." You pour out what is in a cup when it is too full to hold, and you do not pour carefully. Some of it splashes. Some of it is messy. David is telling us that prayer is not a performance for God to grade. Many of us quietly rehearse our prayers the way we rehearse a presentation, trying to sound grateful enough, faithful enough, mature enough. But God is not sitting in the back row with a rubric. He is a refuge, and a refuge is a place you run into when you are out of breath, not a place you enter after you have tidied yourself up.
Think about the friend you can text at 1 AM with a half-finished sentence and no punctuation. You do not edit yourself with that person, because you already know they will not misunderstand you. That is the kind of access the psalm is describing. "At all times" means the anxious Tuesday and the numb Thursday, the day you are proud of yourself and the day you are embarrassed by yourself. There is no hour when the door is closed and no feeling too unpolished to bring through it.
So today, try something small. Before your next class, or on the walk back to your room, say the unedited version out loud or in your head. The fear about the grade. The loneliness you have not told anyone about. The thing you are annoyed at God about. You do not need to fix it first. Pour it out, and let Him be what He says He is: a refuge for us.
Prayer
“Father, I am tired of editing myself before I come to You. Today I am bringing the whole cup, the stress, the doubts, the things I am embarrassed to say. Thank You that You are not surprised by any of it. Be my refuge in the middle of this week, and teach me to trust You at all times, not just when I feel put together. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
