Faith for the Waiting Room
Scripture
“I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”
Psalm 27:13-14Reflection
Late October is a strange stretch of the semester. The excitement of the first weeks is gone, the finish line of December is not quite visible, and a lot of us are sitting in some kind of waiting room. Maybe you are waiting on a grade, an internship reply, a graduate school decision, a text from a friend, or a diagnosis. Nobody warns you that much of life is lived here, in the space between the question and the answer.
David wrote this psalm while he was still in trouble. Look at the verse before it: his enemies were real, and his fear was real. But notice that he does not say, "I know exactly how this will turn out." He says, "I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord." That is a different kind of faith from certainty. It is a decision to lean toward goodness before you can see it. He is not pretending the waiting room is comfortable. He is choosing what to believe while he sits in it.
Then he talks to his own heart, which I find so honest. "Be strong, and let your heart take courage." Notice he says it twice, wait for the Lord, at the beginning and at the end. Anyone who has really waited knows why. You cannot wait once and be done. You have to wait again on Tuesday morning, and again at 2 a.m. when the worry comes back. Faith in uncertainty is rarely one big brave moment. It is the small, repeated choice to say, "God, I am still here, and I still believe you are good."
So today, try this. Name the one thing you are waiting on, and say it out loud to God instead of carrying it silently. Then ask for just enough courage for today, not for the whole outcome. The land of the living is not only heaven someday. David expected to see God's goodness here, in ordinary days, in real life. Keep your eyes open. You may be surprised by where it shows up while you wait.
Prayer
“Father, you see the waiting room I am sitting in today. You know the questions I keep turning over and the answers I wish I had already. Strengthen my heart. Help me believe that your goodness is real even when I cannot see it yet. Give me courage for this one day, and teach me to wait with hope instead of fear. I trust you with what I cannot control. In Jesus' name, amen.”
